On the Matter of Writing, and the Proper Encouragement Thereof

Addressed Affectionately to My Mermaid Darlings By a Lady Who Prefers Ink, Tea, and a Certain Degree of Order

My dearest Mermaid darlings,
It has long been my private conviction—though I confess I have not always been bold enough to speak it aloud—that writing is far less an act of exertion than one of arrangement.

The words themselves, I assure you, are generally quite willing to present themselves. It is merely the manner of their invitation that determines whether they arrive with elegance or decline the engagement entirely.

Thus, before I permit myself to write, I must first attend—most dutifully—to the table.
Of Tea, Refreshment, and Small Deceptions
There is, without exception, a pot of tea.

To attempt writing without it would be an act of reckless imprudence and would almost certainly produce thoughts of a most inferior disposition. Tea steadies the nerves, clears the mind, and gently assures the spirit that it is not required to labour without companionship.

Alongside it, there may appear a glass of sparkling refreshment—a thoroughly modern indulgence—which, if it insists upon attendance, is treated with the utmost discretion. I decant it, disguise it, or place it just beyond polite notice, lest it disturb the gravity of the scene.

One must never allow convenience to outshine intention, my darlings—no matter how effervescent.

Of Sweet Things, Which Are Entirely Necessary
A modest plate of confections is not an extravagance, but a kindness—one I heartily recommend.

A scone, a biscuit, or something gently sugared does far more than appease the appetite; it improves the temper. I have observed, through long and careful study, that prose proceeds with remarkable civility when the writer has granted herself a small pleasure in advance.
One cannot help but marvel at how much patience a little jam procures.

Of Dress Suitable to Thought
I write neither in finery nor in discomfort.
Soft garments are required—those that make no demands upon the body and thus leave the mind at liberty to wander, explore, and occasionally drift like the tide. Only a sleeve or cuff ever enters view, for it would be quite improper to distract one’s thoughts with too much evidence of ease.

The object, my Mermaid darlings, is comfort, never exhibition.

Of Paper, Which Must Always Come First
I do not begin upon a machine.
Every sentence is first committed to paper, written by hand in one of the many notebooks that have gathered around me over the years—some orderly, others enthusiastic to the point of chaos.

Ink, I find, possesses a civilising influence upon thought.

It slows the mind just enough to discourage nonsense.

Only after this first acquaintance do I allow the words to make their way to the computer, where I gently refine them—never scold them—with the assistance of modern conveniences that need not be acknowledged aloud.

Of Sound, and the Proper Degree Thereof
I do not write in silence, though I come very near it.

There is often a low, obliging hush—the suggestion of rain, wind, or distant movement—which asks nothing of the listener and interferes with nothing at all. It resembles the quiet of a house content with itself, or the sea when it has resolved to be agreeable.

The mind, like a guest, prefers neither neglect nor excessive entertainment.

Of the Commonplace Book and Other Companions
Upon the table rests my commonplace book, in which I have long collected observations, sayings, and fragments of wisdom that appeared far too sensible to be entrusted to memory alone.
Nearby are the cabinet cards.

For each character I write, I select a face—printed, framed, and placed where it may observe me in return. It is remarkable how much better one behaves upon the page when one feels faintly accountable to the subject.

A character, like a lady, ought not be imagined at a distance. She must be known.

Of Dictionaries, Definitions, and the Consultation of Elders
There are books upon my table whose sole purpose is to explain words to themselves.

Dictionaries, phrase books, volumes of expressions long in use and not yet worn thin by time—I do not search these books so much as confer with them.

Words, much like people, reveal their finest qualities when approached with courtesy and respect.

Of the Pen, Which Is No Trifle
And lastly—the pen.
It must be a fountain pen, and it must contain sepia ink. On this matter, my Mermaid darlings, I am entirely resolute.

There are refills at the ready, for nothing interrupts a thought more thoroughly than an instrument that chooses, without warning, to lose its resolve.

Sepia belongs to memory.
It forgives haste and flatters reflection.

A Concluding Observation
When I arrange the table, pour the tea, fill the pen, and settle the room into something resembling peace, the writing requires no further persuasion.

The words arrive as they always have.
One must simply make it clear—to oneself, and to them—that they are most welcome.

I remain most affably yours, until my next enchanting swim,
Lady Raquel

What 2019 Taught Me About My Clothing And Style Of Dress

My dear friends and Mermaid Junkies,

Who knew there was something called embodied cognition? I should have guessed because quite frankly I've been on a quest to understand what in the hellfire and brimstone has been emerging from my spirited yet, disenchanted wobbliness when it comes to what I'm wearing. Since childhood, I've fluctuated with my clothing. I love two separate styles, absolutely polar opposite of each other and to be quite honest with you, I NEEDED to bring this to the forefront- meaning, to blog about it, because it has started to drive me up a proverbial wall!

Victorian Views Of Nature's Autumnal Countryside And My Tasha Tudor Halloween Costume Preparation

My dear friends,

Since the gardener and I have been nesting in our temporary home, I have concentrated on my photography skills. Since I don't have a home to maintain, like "a lady of the house", I have the time to really give my undivided attention to learning techniques that I wasn't previously focused on.

As you can see, I finally ironed out some time to bake some Pumpkin Wedge Scones. Thank you to my dear friend, JoeyLeah, for the recipe; however, I ruined this batch; even though the photo looks scrumptious, I had to make another batch after this one. I also added some sugar crystals; they always make things taste better, don't they?

Aren't my momma's Blue Danube dishes beautiful?

6 Guaranteed Reasons I Won't Be Reading Your Blog

My dear friends,

The audacity in that there title. As If, Raquel. Are you anything like me, and your brain doesn't have an "off" button? We are genuinely friends then.

How To Care For Your Hair The Victorian Way

My dear friends,

I have wanted to do this post for quite some time. However, all things accordingly tend to give way at the surface edge in perfect timing, yes?

Mermaids don't live by watches, as the human folks do. {Smile} We do, however, use sands of an hourglass.

Transforming My Life Into A Victorian Lady

My dear friends,

As I have contemplated about what to write, I thought that to keep you abreast of what manner of pursuits I have been experiencing is a delightful way to share on this here ol' blog. For some reason, I feel more connected to you ladies in this atmosphere. I'm curious if I'm the only one. For us to be real friends, we must share life experiences, yes?

The Many Executions At Staffordshire Cottage

My dear friends,

Did you have a delightful weekend? I had a lovely weekend, and I was quite productive.

I had a pleasant visit with my parents, went shopping and got enough custom drapes to cover over half of the cottage windows. I'll show pictures tomorrow. I am currently hemming the last pair this evening. The ol' rabbits in tow.

Winter Solstice And Christmas At Staffordshire Cottage

My dear friends,

"Wishing loving wishes for a Happy Christmas
I know you wish me merry
all the season through
and so with all my heart dear
here's the same to you."~{By: Helen Marion Burnside from a Raphael tuck card, d. 1890}

Might you pour some tea? I'm sipping some spiced cinnamon in hopes to charge my energy levels. I chose this photo because it reminded me of winter Solstice and I simply adore anything from England.

That reminds me of a darling little lady that was living in this charming cottage in Sorrento, Fl. I had made an appointment to see the cottage as I was interested in purchasing. At the time I lived in Orlando, which was a short ways from Sorrento. It looked similar to this home in the photo. I think it's interesting that even though the little lady of the house had lived in the states for decades, she was still inwardly drawn to a cottage such as the ones in Europe; her home of origin. There's not many in the states that are roof thatched and stone, that I've known of, so anytime I find them in America I am so tickled.

Tasha Tudor and one of her corgis.

Doesn't Tasha just ring from the rooftops of holiday "Take Joy" as she was so often quoted.
This was a lovely book, that has pretty poetry inside, along with many duplicates of Christmas cards in the Victorian era. It also came with a Victorian CD of music for the Victrola.
I always hang traditional Brach's candy canes upon the tree. All during the month of December, the children would select a candy cane from the tree as a delightful confection. They've always appreciated itimmensely. Since the divorce and as I've been away from my children on the holidays they have told me numerous times how much I made their Christmas"s special.
I wanted to have a small tree this year to emulate the Victorians. I love the tabletop trees so much. They are also a delightful alternative if you have small children or bunnies such as myself.
I made a few loaves of homemade white bread, and a friend sent over some homemade brew. It was so yummy. It had a hint of a root as I appreciate the taste of root beer.
My ideas seem to run away with me each year. I get so excited about all i plan to do but fail to accomplish it all. I am fine with it these days. I think all too often women get carried away with the appearances of having the preeminent-decorated home, the perfect gifts being given. It is a bit too much in my collective opinion. I only say that now as life experiences have taught me a great deal about outward appearances. All during the raising of my children they received lovely stuffed stockings and three gifts. I choose three as I felt it eliminated the spoiling of the children and it's the same amount that Christ was given on his birth. I quite wonder at times if people really know that the birth of Jesus wasn't actually Christmas, it was in April.  They opened one gift on Christmas Eve and it was always a set of pajamas that I had hand sewn them. They all matched accordingly. It was such fun to make them. Preparing the selected fabrics. Would I choose gingham, flannel, tartan plaid? It was some of the happiest times as a mother. When I was busily being a homemaker, I was most contented.  I really enjoyed all the traditions. I believe it's particularly important for me to have traditions, as I felt as a yound little girl I don't recall any traditions except for Christmas Eve my mother read," twas the night before christmas" to my brothers and I.
I found this needlepoint stocking at the thrift store a few weeks ago and i couldn't love it more. I want to keep a lookout for another one for myself. This one I assigned as my beloved gardeners. He loves the colour green and it feels a tad more masculine.

Another close up of my little mermaid ornaments. I love them ever so much! My dear friends Suzanne, Janis and my Aunt Dianne have all gifted me one. My mother bought one for me too.  I'm so appreciative for the ladies that have been so warm and comforting to me along my journey.  That is the true definition of what Christmas is all about in my eyes.

Ardently Mothering

My dear friends,

Good Morning and Salutations. I am happily hot~handed writing to you on this cold crisp dewy damp day from Florida. I have been desperate for the cold, and I awoke this morning to receive a gift from the weather gods. I'm still bundled up, having tea and some scrambled eggs with cheese for breakfast. It's a delight to have fresh eggs from my chicken ladies.

A History Of The Redhead~Vexings and Victories

My Dear Friends,

It's no longer National Redhead Day, but, as I'm a woman of my word, I feel it pertinent to write. I am a work in progress, so thank you for your patience, jolly dependable readers.

Won't you pour some tea and I shall get on with it? Today, my beverage of choice is apple spice tea with honey.

Since I am a real redhead, I now celebrate the fact that I have an extra chromosome.

As you may well know, I have been on a self-awareness voyage for almost five years, and my thoughts have led me to several conclusions.

Ever since I was a sprout, I've been the inquisitive type. Throughout my life, there have been assumptions made about me, because of my red hair. On this particular day, I'd like to share my experiences as a redhead, as well as, vexings, victories and a tad bit of history.

Throughout history, women with red hair were shunned and burned at stake, all because they had hair the colour of flames. They were labelled as witches and vampires, who spewed fire from their lungs.

As a young girl with red hair, I was bullied. Redheads weren't admired; especially, the way that they are now. In fact, today, it seems that every turn I take, a woman is dying her hair red. I think I had {or have}, a little resentment with regards to the treatment that I received as a young girl, in comparison to the treatment women get nowadays. It seems that women today are admired and adored. That was not the case when I was young. Let's be honest, there's a whole new way that women with red hair get attention.
I think you can collectively understand my sentiments, without me having to further my case, that I developed paramount insecurities by having red hair. I even went so far, as to dye my hair brown, because of my dangers.

Here are several things that scientifically make me different because of red hair:

1. Redheads have a recessive gene, and both parents must have the gene, to have a child with red hair. The parent doesn't have to have red hair themselves, and often a parent carries the gene, without knowing.

 2. Redheads make up 2% of the population, making us quite rare. England and Ireland are the most populated with folks having red hair.

3. Redheads are more sensitive to pain and more resistant to pain medication.

4. We carry a mutant gene, which makes us genetically different.

5. We have a superior adrenal function. Meaning, that, in a fight or flight scenario, having a redhead around would be beneficial; we operate very well in dangerous situations.

6. Redheads have a different smell. The skin mantle of a redhead is more acidic. Meaning, that when we wear perfume, oils or fragrances, the scent is distinct. We have to apply scents more frequently than the average person, as odours fade more quickly than perhaps, a blond or brunette.

7. Redheads are more sensitive to thermal pain; and more vulnerable to hot and cold temperatures.

8. We are more susceptible to getting cancer.

9. We have more vitamin D than other folks.

10. Historically, we've been seen as royalty. Have you ever noticed, in movies or storybooks, how many redheads are either, the heroines or villains?

11. We have a high tolerance to heat.

A delightful book about the history of redheads is, "Red-A History of the Redhead" by Jacky Collins Harvey.

Most affably your til my next swim, Raquelxxx
