A Letter from the Hedgerow; On Finding Our Footing and a Place to Belong

My dear Mermaid Darlings, and the ladies of Stillwater, A Petticoat Society,

I have much yet to write, though I had hoped to place some of it between the covers of my book by Michaelmas. Part autobiography, part spiritual guidance, with the various threads of a life woven through it, the book must wait a little longer; certain passages still require something of me that I cannot hurry.

I keep a reasonably firm appointment with my work, but I have learnt to allow Father Time a chair at the table. He has a habit of arriving whether one invites him or not.

As of late, I have felt troubled, and I spoke a little of this on my YouTube channel. The telling eased some of the pressure, though the circumstances I last wrote about continue, and those earlier words still hold. What I have learnt, however, is to let a difficult feeling pass through without furnishing an entire room for it.

So I read, quite fervently at times, and return to my writing and painting; these familiar occupations help me find my footing. Our big blue marble carries a great deal of bleakness, and a tender heart can scarcely look about without finding something to grieve. Yet, in the quiet of meditation, I keep returning to the same small mercy; after a proper, deep cry, I find that I can rise and attend to life again. I think of Lady Mary on Downton Abbey assuring Carson that she never remains down for long, and recognise something of that resolve.

I owe much of my own steadiness to Spirit, and to the daily practise that grew into The Alchemy of Mermaidology, the subliminals I created under that guidance. In my experience, this work has helped me gather myself, stitch by stitch, when life has pulled at the seams.

Before I began tending so deliberately to the beliefs I carried, I spent far too much of my life answering old hurts. Many childhood lessons followed me into grown rooms, and I scarcely settled one disturbance before another demanded my attention. That keeping watch over every feeling left little strength for the life I wished to make.

I suspect some women recognise this exhaustion, even when they have very little to say about it.

Within our little Stillwater, there may be ladies who feel deeply troubled by what they see in the world, yet hesitate over how to speak.

I understand the hesitation. Once one steps forward, others may expect an argument, an allegiance, or an explanation for every word; a woman can find herself defending a position when she had only meant to open a conversation.

I should like our conversations to leave room for thought, and for the gentleness that allows a person to remain at the table. I intend to keep using my platforms to encourage honest reflection, spiritual growth, and the integrity I understand through Christ consciousness.

These things ask something of our conduct; they reach into how we speak to a woman whose beliefs differ from our own, how we receive her confidence, and whether she leaves our company feeling that she must conceal herself to belong.

That matters very much to me.

It lies at the heart of The Carter Settlement, which I founded with the hope of giving this work a place in the world; somewhere for workshops, small gatherings, useful learning, and the pleasure of women encouraging one another. We have yet to secure a permanent home on land, though I continue to hold the vision of a door we may one day open together.

I imagine a lady arriving with her sewing, her questions, or simply a tired heart, and finding that someone has put the kettle on.

A woman of religious faith will be welcome there, as will a woman still finding her way. No lady should have to borrow another’s convictions to earn her place amoung us.

After many years within two organised religions, I came to understand that I could no longer remain within certain expectations and keep faith with my own conscience. That belongs to my journey; I have no wish to prescribe another woman’s. I do, however, intend to take care of the spirit in which we gather.

I have known circles of women where an unspoken examination seemed to begin almost before one sat down. I have also recognised, in myself, the anxious wish to arrange everything and everyone until life felt sufficiently safe. Fear can make control seem useful for a time; eventually, one discovers how much effort it takes to keep a hand upon every door.

I speak of this with some tenderness because I have spent more than a decade questioning what I once accepted, and loosening habits I once mistook for protection.

This is part of why I share my subliminals, and why the work remains so personal to me. I wish to help a lady hear her own thoughts again, consider what serves her, and recover the parts of herself she put away while managing all that life required.

I have little appetite for fastening a label to a woman and deciding that the matter of her character is settled. We rarely know the whole history of the person before us. I am quite prepared to stand by that conviction, even if I find myself keeping a solitary patch of hillside for a while.

As the book has waited, small portions of these thoughts have found their way onto Instagram and YouTube; others I have shared only with my beloved gardener. The fuller telling belongs in the book, and some pages must remain private whilst I find their proper words.

Meanwhile, I am grateful for this little blog. I keep it quiet, unhurried, and free of advertisements, with no subscription required to open the gate. I should like it to remain here for years to come, carrying something of those earlier golden years of blogging, when one visited a familiar page and lingered over the words because one cared for the person writing them.

Women need places where they may arrive without having to make an occasion of themselves. That is how I think of our Hedgerow Post.

Helen Allingham, my favourite artist, painted Witley Post Office, and I chose it for the lovely correspondence it holds with the little post office in the hedge in Little Women.

That image has long expressed how I feel about meeting one another online; we leave a comment, a thought, or a small confidence for someone to discover, and return to find that she has left something for us.

I first knew that pleasure through my blog, and I recognise it amoung the dear souls who gather on my YouTube channel. A few thoughtful words can make the distance between two lives feel remarkably small.

Come to think of it, much of what I create begins with that same hope.

Our dear Letterbox-in-the-Hedge remains rather quiet, but I have a good feeling about the company it may gather. You are also very welcome to leave a little something here if the sentiment strikes you.

I tend the blog comments myself, making room for kind conversation and quietly attending to unpleasantness when necessary. It may seem a modest task, but a thoughtful reply gives another woman somewhere to begin; in time, we come to recognise one another.

I intend to keep that gate open, free of charge.

My hope is that these exchanges will lend a familiar warmth to the day we finally meet at The Carter Settlement, having already shared something of our lives across the hedgerow.

If you feel inclined, perhaps you might include our future home in your prayers, or hold it in your own quiet imaginings; a place made possible through a generous benefactor, a gift of land, or several helpful hearts bringing their means together.

Until then, I shall keep writing, tending this little corner, and leaving the letterbox within reach.

Wishing you a lovely autumn, my dear hearts.

Most affably yours til my next enchanting swim,

Lady Raquel

Our First Chinsegut Hill Social Gathering!

My dear mermaid hearts,

This little niche on ye ole' web has been a neglected place since the end of January, my apologies, darlings, it's been for good reason.

There have been many moving parts that have happened since December. I have manifested a fantastic list of notions that i promised to tell and astonish you simultaneously. I manifested a charming Florida Cracker-style home free and clear (completely paid for), a lump sum of money, numerous assets in an estate, and all with no capital gains. I am still manifesting another huge desire, of which I am chuffed to bits about.

But we mustn't share that until it is in my 3D. It will remain a mermaid secret in the sand until then. Some folks are reading my work, and their plots possess the odour of graverobbing about them. What my words or past experiences have not taught them, the coming events will.

It will astonish you, though, and then perhaps you darling dear folks will believe me and want to jump aboard to rewire your subconscious mind to create the life of your dreams, too.

In addition to that, I've been in touch with my gifts as a channelled medium, and my YouTube channel went viral, and there's movement on my social media and blog stats. It feels so wonderful to be rewarded financially for my gifts.

Now, mind you, on my YouTube channel i am, for the most part, channelling for celebrities, which brings in revenue from AdSense, but i also sell readings on my Etsy shoppe.

I joined Chinsegut Hill to begin yearly classes, gatherings, and retreats as part of The Carter Settlement. Our first one will be one day only in May.

Come ye forth, fair sea maidens, ladies and gentlewomen of discerning spirit, for an afternoon steep'd in mirth, wisdom, and the art of Manifestation, Divine Remembrance and the Delicate Arts of Handcraft.

May 10, 2025, Saturday
Brooksville, Florida
Location: Chinsegut Hill
Ages: 17 & Up
10 a.m. -3 p.m.

Deadline for sand dollar reservations: April 10th, 2025

Upon this most resplendent occasion, where elegance and enchantment intertwine, every delicate detail hath been attended with the utmost refinement—nary a teacup nor tuffet left unadorned, nor a dainty morsel served without the whisper of luxury. A gathering most rare and abundant, fashioned for ladies of discerning taste who delight in the finer charms of life, this affair is a testament to grace, grandeur, and the art of lavish hospitality.

{Shouldst thou feel inclined to bestow a token of patronage, know that such generosity shall be met with deepest gratitude, ensuring that this exquisite assembly remains a beacon of beauty, fellowship, and feminine delight for seasons to come.}

Ewe Have My Heart

Good day dear mermaid hearts,

I spoke often and jotted down the desire to have a little flock outside my cottage garden window, and now we're in the process of its manifestation. Wait, I've already shared that news, haven't I?
Here's another charming picture of a flock of sheep. Do you like how I have everything in a sepia tone? If one adores the olde, timey ways, of course, you change the filter to a sepia or black and white. Actually, that is my brilliant idea to have all of your coloured photos switched into black and white or sepia and then hang them back up. I've been doing this for a little over 30 plus years. (Remember when we’d have to send away our film to have it developed and then have a drug store change the colour for you? Yes, that long ago, my fruits.) Since my early childhood and throughout my life, I've always been ahead of my time with most things; such as I've been saying there will come a time when olde timey clothes will come back into fashion (hence the cottage core phenomenon), women will begin homeschooling their children and learning homesteading skills, styling a home a particular way etc.) It always makes things look like the Victorian era in your little abode, and we all know I am a sucker for the Victorian-era English cottage charm. If it sounds posh and arrogant that I stake claims that I'm ahead of my time, I am no longer in the business of dimming my light to make others comfortable. That there ole’ gal died a long time ago. I've spent too many years of my life making allowances simply for others to disrespect me brazenly, and that is no longer a tolerable favour.
Okay, my dear mermaid hearts, where was I?

I am one for endlessly getting sidetracked.

Oh yes, I was banging on about manifestation and how we dim
our dreams.

Often, The truth is we will place barriers for ourselves, immediately creating resistance where there needs to be none. How often than not have you indeed sent off an inner desire, throwing caution to the wind but then directly back peddling your passions with abandonment because the dream isn't practical? I speak of this because I know how notorious I was for doing this to myself as if I wasn't worthy of having what I wanted. Bestowed upon us as women is a learned behaviour that we aren't worthy of having what we want. Perhaps a blessing each of us could clutch onto is the remembrance of our most authentic passions. It's rather enlightening to uncover that often what a woman calls the search for belonging isn't what she thought at all; it arises to be her repressed desires she loved as a young person that imprinted on her heart, made her feel alive, joyful and an undeniable bliss for life.

An artist and a writer takes time to conquer. There's an art in waiting, and as of yet, I've not had the pleasure of mastering it, but I am getting there. Patience requires time and knowledge, which makes perfect sense; look at a gardener understanding the cycles of seasons.

"He'd talk, and I'd lose sight of the truth." ~ Elizabeth, Deceit and Dissension
I've got a million and one matters on the ole' boiler at the moment, one being I am deep into research and plot for my 19th-century British romantic novel Deceit and Dissension.

You can right jolly bet I am loving every aspect of it. This book is pure perfection. I use my imagination and think of what actors and actresses I'd like to play my characters if the book became a film. It's indeed perfect enough.

I have also been doing a bit of gardening. I cooked several fresh garden greens, turnips, and collards for the new year. I also have some onions too. The rabbits loved the greens; they devoured them straight away.

I've also been doing a bit of organising and proper cleaning of the cottage. I am making more plans than ever. You know me, I've got a million ideas and want to accomplish them all. What fun to have exciting little projects. One project is I took up all the bricks in front of the cottage doors, and I will bring in flagstone and a fun little Irish moss-type ground covering to grow between the stones. I've also become aware by little chitchatting birds that I may have to go with another clever notion. I've read up on Irish Moss in Florida (zone 9), and it struggles to survive. We shall see, though; perhaps I manifest it thrives where I plant it. Nothing is beyond me manifesting. I'll tell you that, my friend. There's an illustration I painted for you of the path. Unfortunately, I don't have a picturesque real-time image (to show you) yet, but we shall get there, my darlings. All things in due time. Though the painting is quite charming, don't you think?
The tea cups and teapots are officially on their way from England (Staffordshire). Thank goodness, perhaps they'll be here in time for our first 2024 small gathering of The Petticoat Society (aka The Carter Settlement). I'll explain that bit of news in the next post. Please sign up on my email pop-up list, and you'll get notifications. I rarely (and I mean rarely, if ever send email newsletters, or you can constantly check here on the blog) about announcements of when and where I will be and what events I'm at. I'm more than happy to post about particular events here on ye olde blog, so check back occasionally to see what sort of mischief I've got up to, if you, please. Teehee.

Have a wonderful weekend and toddle-pip!

Most affably yours til my next swim, Razz
